Finding quality individual health insurance
Finding quality health insurance that will work for you as a professional marine crew member can be challenging. The marine crew career has no geographic limits, and your health insurance can’t have any boundaries either. You need a comprehensive plan that works worldwide and offer substantial protection. As a professional marine crew member, your life has risks, that others can only imagine. Accidents and illnesses happen, lessen the risk by insuring your specific needs!
We offer several health insurance plans especially designed for the unique demands of the marine crew profession. There are both individual and group health insurance plans available. The individual medical insurance plan is excellent if you’re freelancing and changing yachts often. You own the plan and can take it with you to the next job. The yacht owners are usually willing to reimburse you for the health insurance premium as it protects them from financial liability.

Health Insurance Solution
The group medical plan is a great solution mainly for the vessels with a crew of two and more. The turnover of the crew on the yachts is less when insurance is provided. The yacht’s P&I insurance may require that private crew medical schemes are always in place, to avoid having to claim under the P&I, which is the yacht’s liability insurance.
And some group crew medical policies are not medically underwritten, so crew members are automatically accepted on the group plan Day 1, whether they have a medical condition or not. It’s popular to add dental benefits to expand the coverage.
As an individual crew member, you can choose either a short-term travel medical policy, or a long-term, “permanent” health insurance plan. The short-term travel medical plan is a perfect solution if you’re between jobs or waiting for the group benefits to begin on the yacht. It takes as little as 24 hours to take in effect and the application process is quick and easy! The individual long-term medical plan covers you for a year and can be renewed annually. It offers better benefits than the short-term travel plan, with lifetime benefits of at least $5,000,000. The monthly premiums are reasonably priced.
Health Insurance Coverage
All plans we offer cover you on- and- off the yacht, anywhere in the world, whether you’re working on the yacht or on your time off. Keep in mind that the boat’s P&I insurance may only cover you when you’re “signed on” to the yacht, (being at work), and not during your time off. Many owners are open to the idea of paying an additional insurance premium to cover the crew in case of a medical emergency. It will save them money in long run and avoid having to use the yacht P&I insurance to cover medical expenses.
Marine crew medical insurance is available to professional marine crew members of all nationalities. Whether you’re an international citizen traveling worldwide, including to the US, or if you’re a US citizen traveling internationally and, in the US, we cover you anywhere at any time. If you are a US citizen, keep in mind that your domestic health insurance plan has limitations when it comes to international coverage. It most likely has geographical exclusions and coverage limitations while outside the US.
Medical Benefits
Policy lifetime max of $5 million to “unlimited”. Benefits include but are not limited to, Emergency Air evacuation, Hospitalization, Doctor visits, Preventative care, Physical exams, Prescriptions, Dental benefits, Physical Exams, etc. Please note as with all private insurance schemes, there are policy deductibles and limitations, such as waiting periods, exclusions, etc. Pre-existing conditions may be “excluded” or “rated up” (pay a surcharge). It’s important to read the policy certificate and understand how the policy works, before you have a claim.
Suitable for
Freelancing yacht crew changing yachts often and crew members who want to be in control of their healthcare as an individual plan is a “personal plan” that is not tied to the employment and can be taken with from job-to-job.
Marine crew members spending at least 3 months outside their “Home Country”. Some plans require 6 months outside the US. Coverage can include or exclude the US, depending on the geographical coverage area needed.
